What are the parameters which you need to check while buying a used car tyre?

1) The Age of the Tyre:-

A tyre which is more than 5 years older needs to be checked fully & properly at regular intervals. If cracks appear & start deepening on the sidewalls or tread, it’s time to replace them. Tyres more than 8 years of age can fail you any moment as it becomes difficult for the elements constituting the tyre to be held together by the rubber. Though it depends on the driving & climatic conditions in which the car is being driven, sometimes tyres even hold upto beyond 12 years, but it is imperative to keep checking the tyres frequently after 5 years.

How to find out age of the tyre? →If you want to know the age of a tyre, check it’s sidewall. The last four digits represent the week and the year in which the tyre was manufactured. for eg if you see a code 1516, it means the tyre was made in the 15th week of the year 2016. This tyre is relatively new, so if it looks free of any visible cracks/damage; it should prove to be a good buy.

2) The depth of tread:-

The tread of a tyre refers to the rubber on its circumference which makes contact with the road. As the tyres are used, the tread is worn off, limiting its effectiveness in providing hold.

The depth of tread is the vertical measurement between the top and the bottom of the rubber pattern on the tyre. Research & data has pointed out that more accidents happen when the tread depth is very less or below a certain specified & accepted threshold value.

3) Cuts, cracks and bumps in the outer sidewalls of the car or belt separation:-

Apart from the tyre tread, you must check the entire surface of the tyre for cracks which can be seen in the sidewall. If the sidewall has bumps, cuts or other irregularities it could be hazardous as a collision could be the cause forcing the rubber to get delaminated from its belts. There must be no steel cords jutting out from the tyre. You will be able to feel changes in the rubber surface by running your hands over the sidewall and tread surface even if the irregularity is not obvious when the tyre is not inflated.

4) Check the tyre’s bead area for damage:-

The bead area is the inner circle of the tyre that connects the tyre to the wheel and holds it closely together. If there are missing chunks of rubber or other damage at the tyre’s bead areas then it’s unsafe to use. This is because the damaged part might prevent it from sealing properly.

5) Check for Punctures:-

You need to check for punctures or recently repaired puncture marks. If the repair signs are prominent, they must not be irregular & the tube(in case of tyres with tube)should not be visible or jutting out from the car, at all.

6) Check for irregular wear on the tyres:-

Irregular wear on the tyres points to a number of neglected car issues. The wheels may not be aligned, the tyres could be imbalanced(tyre imbalance is a condition when the weight of a tyre is unevenly distributed around the tyre-wheel unit circumference. The comfort of your ride and the lifespan of your tyres, wheels, and suspension, greatly depend on it.) Used car tyres normally do not last very long or have a shorter life-span if they are wearing unevenly.

7) Bead chunking:-
The tyre is dangerous if you can see chunks of rubber missing from the bead area. The bead may come off the rim any moment, as the damage amplifies. Normally this kind of a tyre loses more air or rather more quickly loses air than the others. This can result in a sudden blowout.

8) Liner damage:-
Even a minor damage to the liner can cause a sidewall collapse, air loss, etc. The tyre may just fold and immediately fail. Also, if you find rubber dust inside the tire, there are more chances of it being damaged, as the sidewalls must have scrubbed themselves off at some point of time.

Either you need to perform these checks yourself or get someone who can do it for you to accompany you when you set out to buy a used car tyre. Buying a used car tyre will have the following two benefits:-

It is sometimes possible to get tyres in a really good condition at 50% of the cost of a brand new tyre. The raw materials to prepare tyre include wood, hence trees are cut down to generate raw materials for new tyres to be manufactured.
